Established in 2011 by Cricket Australia, the league transformed domestic cricket by replacing the former state-based KFC Twenty20 Big Bash with a city-based franchise model. Since its inception, the BBL has grown into one of the most-watched and commercially successful T20 leagues in the world, attracting elite Australian cricketers, international stars, and millions of viewers every season.
History of the Big Bash League
The inaugural BBL season began in 2011–12 with the objective of making cricket more entertaining, accessible, and family-friendly. Inspired by the success of franchise-based leagues around the world, Cricket Australia introduced eight city-based teams instead of the traditional state teams.
The first BBL champions were the Sydney Sixers, who defeated the Perth Scorchers in the inaugural final.
Over the years, the league has expanded its global reach through television broadcasts in over 100 countries and has become a major contributor to the growth of T20 cricket.
